Hyderabad: Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches on NRI Academy of Sciences, popularly known as NRI Medical College, at Chinakakani in AP’s Guntur following money laundering and other charges, including excess billing of Covid-19 and donations paid by medical students.
ED Hyderabad unit conducted searches at 15 locations, including the hospital, medical college and residences of the president, secretary, treasurer and other officer-bearers of the educational society.
In June 2021, a complaint was filed by Gaddipati Srinivasarao, an office assistant in NRI Academy of Sciences. Police registered a case against Nimmagadda Upendranath, Akkineni Mani and Uppalapu Srinivasa Rao of the society management committee, who allegedly misappropriated society’s funds by diverting them for their personal use.
In the FIR, police said: “The office-bearers conspired and hatched a plan to misappropriate the society’s funds. They created an account under the head ‘buildings’ and transferred ₹4 crore between 2017 and 2018. As more than ₹2 lakh should not be paid in cash, the accused showed payment entries in the ledger accounts under the ‘buildings.’ head.
